To enable good weldability characteristics among the many Inconel grades, Inconel 718 square bar was developed for a number of reasons, one of which was to permit this. It is challenging to weld some Inconel grades, such as Waspalloy and X-750.

The Inconel 718 hex bar can help with that. The microstructure of Inconel 718 does not segregate alloying elements in the heat-affected zone or cause welding to be difficult due to cracking. As a result, welding a UNS N07718 bar can be done using processes including gas tungsten arc welding and electron beam welding. An inert tungsten electrode can be used to weld these ASTM B637 round bars using gas tungsten arc welding, often known as GTAW.

This is the reason why the gas tungsten arc welding method is also known as TIG welding, or tungsten inert gas welding. Since the aerospace sector also uses Inconel 718 rod, it makes sense that gas tungsten arc welding be utilised to join Inconel 718 parts in this sector. However, the fact that this technology may be used to achieve high-quality welds on Inconel 718 flat bar cannot be discounted.

Another reason why our customers favour using an Inconel 718 round bar and the gas tungsten arc welding method is because both the weld region and the electrode are shielded from oxidation and other types of air pollution. This is done by using a filler metal, which is a typical aspect of the gas tungsten arc welding procedure, together with an inert shielding gas like argon or helium.

Nickel alloy 718 bar testing procedure

The notch rupture life and rupture ductility of the nickel alloy 718 are tested. Tensile and yield strengths are used to measure these. The bars' minimum yield strength and tensile strength are 987 MPa and 1100 MPa, respectively. However, testing are required to prove that the products fulfil the required criteria. The bars go through many testing, including the Krouse test, rotating beam fatigue tests, transverse tests, short transverse tests, and stress-rupture tests. Depending on the consumer, some tests are required and some are optional. In order to determine the ultimate tensile strength, the ends of the bars are dragged between two pulling components until they break. Each test requires a separate set of steps to be taken in order to obtain the findings.
