Although stainless steel alloys typically have great strength and excellent corrosion resistance, surface treatment can be used to improve these qualities. For instance, the Indian maker of lag bolts can galvanise them to increase their hardness and corrosion resistance. Any type of galvanised lag bolt and a stainless steel lag bolt differ primarily in that the former has a layer of zinc applied to its surface.
Bolts that have been galvanised provide a higher level of protection compared to those that have been electroplated because the finish applied to 3/8 stainless steel lag bolts during galvanization is significantly thicker than it is during electroplating. Additionally, the stainless steel lag bolt strength is increased as a result of the zinc coating that is applied to these components, which also protects the fastener from corrosive media. The benefit of galvanising the material is that the component, in this example the 1/2 x 6 stainless steel 316 lag eye screw, will not corrode as easily, particularly by oxidation, which is the most prevalent source of corrosion.
However, using an alloy grade to create a 1/2 x 6 stainless steel lag eye bolt with a substantially greater chromium content could further slow the rate of oxidation. One such alloy is grade 316, with its entire alloy weight containing 16.5 percent chromium. The stainless steel lag eye bolt with ring can create a thick passivate oxide layer with a chromium concentration of over 14% that shields the fasteners from oxidation corrosion.
